The 4 Block Structure

Good lift letters typically follow the same 4 Block Structure:

  • Block A: Disrupt

  • Block B: Intrigue

  • Block C: Click

  • Block U: Urgency

Block A: Disrupt

A pattern interrupt that captures attention and sends your reader flying down your email.

This can be done with a statement that incites curiosity, or by introducing something aligned with a big benefit or problem for your reader.

Here are a few examples of ‘disrupt’ statements.

Examples:

  • Sorry Mom, if you see this, I know it goes against everything you’ve taught me

  • I always hated penny stocks… then I discovered this $3 ‘wonder stock’ hiding in a weird place

  • Most traders tell you to buy Apple… or Google, but they’re wrong

  • One simple idea could be worth 452%

  • When was the last time you doubled your money on a single trade?

  • When we first put together this bundle, we almost didn’t release it. It was too powerful for the price point… But once the success stories started flooding in…

Block B: Intrigue

Expansion on Block A. The ultimate goal is to build curiosity by teasing elements of the core idea or proof elements for credibility.

The key here is to ‘Describe, not explain’ - you never want to give away what your offer actually is.

Examples:
“Most traders tell you to buy Apple…
Or Google…
But that’s WRONG.
The trick is to buy the space in between Apple and it’s old competitor, BlackBerry.
When you do that, you can almost never go wrong!”

Dear Reader,

Pretty good, right?

Arguably, the second most important part of your emails - The final push to get your reader into your sales vehicle (VSL, Sales page etc).

Ask yourself -

“Why does the reader need to stop and take the action you want?”

What do they stand to lose by NOT taking action?

What can we do to trigger a FOMO (Fear of missing out) response?

Block D: Kick

This is a last-ditch effort to get them to take action.

Usually in the form of a P.S., which:

  • Restates the core idea/promise of the email

  • Introduces a secondary benefit

  • Uses testimonials to build curiosity

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Throat Clear

    • Establishing non-important context

    • Telling them what they already know

  • The Pivot

    • The result of not having a defined core idea or a weak core idea

    • A pivot is the introduction to a concept, then an immediate pivot to another completely new and disconnected concept

    • Instead, expand on your original concept

    • Here’s an example:

    “Trading like a pro used to be something available to a select few. Back at my old hedge fund, our motto was “Make money every day.”

  • Too many ideas in 1 email
    Your emails should follow a single idea.

  • Giving too much
    Revealing too much.

    Describe, don’t explain

  • The 150-word rule

    If you can’t write about an idea for 150 words, it’s probably a weak idea, and if you stick to the 150 word rule it prevents all the mistakes above
